Communicating Like A Pro

By now you already know that the average attention span of most humans is shorter than that of a gold fish.  Meaning you'd have to state your main idea in an appealing way within the first 8  seconds of your elevator pitch or presentation; in order for your target audience to pick interest and act in your favour.

To make the most of a limited time when communicating your ideas, "The Pyramid Principle" is a very effective structure.

At its core, The Pyramid Principle is a way of explaining ideas in a way that allows you to quickly seize your audience’s attention and communicate with gravitas, by creating a compelling story that is easy to understand and remember.

It involves communicating in an "audience focused" manner, by:

🍕 First - starting your pitch or presentation with the main point.

The main point could either be the solution to your audience's problem, an answer to your audience's question, or your hypothesis to an identified problem.

By doing this, you condition the minds of your audience to make decisions in your favour.

🍕 Second - grouping and summarizing your supporting points or arguments.

The Pyramid Principle advocates that “ideas in writing should always form a pyramid under a single thought.”

The single thought is your solution to the audience's problem. Below the single thought, you then group and summarize the next level of supporting ideas and arguments. Then, for each supporting idea or argument, break that further into more ideas or arguments until you have formed a pyramid.

By grouping and summarizing your supporting arguments in a pyramid order; you flow, thereby making it much easier for you to move from what your audience is interested in knowing, to the supporting facts they need in order to make an informed decision.

🍕 Finally - ordering supporting ideas in a logical pattern.

You should ensure that the ideas you bring together under each group actually belong together, are at the same level of importance, and follow a logical structure.

In conclusion, The Pyramid Principle is valuable for communicating with anyone whom you wish to persuade with argument.
