What Causes Addiction

Although scientific studies prove that addictive habits stem from several factors such as genetics, environment, trauma, and loneliness; it is also important to note that a neurotransmitter called "dopamine" which plays a major role in reward-motivated behavior is mostly responsible for the pleasurable sensation (aka high) we feel when our needs are either being met or are about to be met.

This chemical causes us to develop strong tolerance for activities or things that make us feel good, and as such, pushes us to need more of a substance or an activity that feels pleasurable.

While people can get this chemical released by indulging in unhealthy practices and addictive habits like: alcoholism, drug abuse, porn, s*x, social media, unhealthy competition, shopping sprees, and binge eating - which come at a very expensive price. This same chemical can also be released by maintaining healthy lifestyle habits like: exercising, cleaning up, gardening, meditating, praying, connecting with loved ones, sports, games, creative activities, mastering new skills, completing projects, contributing towards positive courses, attending live concerts, and working towards a specific goal.

So next time you feel like indulging a bad habit or addiction, consider the long-term costs and more healthy alternatives.
