What Whatsapp Can Teach Us About Human Relationships

What Whatsapp Can Teach Us About Human Relationships

Don't turn off your Whatsapp read receipts, do this instead...

You see, while turning off your Whatsapp read receipt allows you to read WhatsApp messages without making it apparent to the sender, it can also be a sign that you lack confidence or worse, give your contacts the impression that you aren't a reliable ally.

In simple terms, a WhatsApp read receipt refers to the two blue checkmarks ✓ you see when your recipient reads your message on Whatsapp. However, if your recipient turns off their read receipts you only get to see two grey checkmarks  even after they have read your Whatsapp message, plus the time they read your message will not be available to you.

So in a nutshell, the read receipts must be enabled on both sides to view the message read information.

Strangely, WhatsApp voice messages treat read receipts uniquely 😁.... Thank me later.

For instance, if you send a voice message of 2 seconds or more to a person who has their read receipts off, you will still see the blue checkmarks when the person views the voice message. Further more, in message information you will also find the "Seen" and "Played time" for the message to find out whether they are reading your messages or not.

But before I give you my suggestion on what you can do instead of turning off your read receipt and appearing anti-social, let's briefly see some reasons why people may choose to turn off their read receipts:

  1. Turning the read receipts off helps some people remove the pressure of having to reply to messages right away, thereby maintaining their privacy and enabling them to focus on their work or busy schedule.
  2. There may be times people read a message but don’t feel like responding to it at that particular time. Hence, in order not to make it seem as if they are intentionally ignoring your messages, they can decide to turn off read receipts so that you don't read a negative meaning to their current mood.
  3. Read receipts can even become a source of anxiety for some people, especially if they see their message was read but not responded to promptly. Turning these notifications off can make their lives and that of their recipient a bit less stressful.

My Opinion: Because I personally promote and encourage people to always work on themselves and even have a blog for that cause www.elileojo.blogspot.com ; I think more people should develop their self confidence as well as empathy in virtual and physical relationships.

Follow the golden rule, treat others how you want to be treated.

For example; Let's say you have an engagement or you're working with someone on a project that has a deadline. It costs you nothing to provide your partner with sincere updates from time to time on how much progress you have made or whatever challenges you may be experiencing in the process way before the deadline.

Little things like this make people trust and respect you in professional and non-professional relationships.

My Suggestion: If you have a busy schedule or simply need to take a break, please instead of turning off your read receipts; you can choose to leave the message unopened until it is convenient for you to read it and reply politely.

OR

Read the message and politely let your recipient know why you can't give them a reply immediately whilst also assuring them of a more appropriate time for them to expect a reply from you - then note that on your to-do list.

In conclusion, humans are creatures of emotion so it is only decent for you to treat people with respect and care, whilst creating healthy boundaries to help you stay more productive. Notwithstanding, you are free to do what works best for you.
